Liberty Mountain Resort
Previously an asphalt roundabout/drop off for buses and resort customers, we were asked to transform the space into a vibrant courtyard that would support year round resort activities. The courtyard needed to facilitate large groups of people and yet provide places where friends could gather and take in the scenes during their stay at the resort. The courtyard is built around a “park like” central eclipse that in the winter months converts into an ice skating rink. An adjacent skate shack even houses a small Zamboni machine. Stone planters, doubling as seat walls, surround the eclipse and also carve out an outdoor café, containing two fire pits to keep patrons warm and cozy. A pavilion and pergola structure, complete with a custom stone fireplace, provides another destination to bask in the environment and/or accommodate group events like wedding receptions. Overall, the project was very expansive, more than 20,000 s.f. of concrete pavers. Yet, with the presence of sweeping accent bands and alternating paver selections, the courtyard has a nice “sense of space” to it.
